An application of labor union members
App for Labor Unions
A public-facing application for union members including shop stewards.
Why an app for union members?
Labor unions don’t often have a framework to bring together all the different tools they have available for members. From the user perspective, most unions don’t provide one single, easy to access resource for benefit and contract related information.
From the business perspective, having such a tool would increase member engagement, allow the union to target specific Communications strategies, and encourage member turnout to events. Such an app could especially empower shop stewards with better representing the members at their work location.
For this project, I took a comprehensive Design Process approach, starting with empathizing with users through user interviews, surveys and direct observations and defining user needs through User Personas. After ideating, I created wireframes and prototypes which I then used for testing through task analysis and usability testing and also gathered user feedback through interviews. As the team implemented this application, and issues we hadn’t foreseen arose, I often returned to the design process and iterated as needed.
Understanding the Users
Through a combination of user interviews, surveys and direct observation, I put together a detailed look into who the users are, their goals, and their pain points.

User Persona: Roberto
Scenario:
Roberto is a security officer in New York City. He’s been a union member and has been a steward for 5 years for his building. He knows if his building is strong that they can get a better contract. So whenever he sees new hires, he always makes sure to tell them about the union and asks them to sign a membership card.
Goals:
Needs to know who works in his shop and if they are new and need to know what the union is and what it does
Needs to know when union events are happening
Needs to keep records of conversations with union members about worksite issues and concerns
Frustrations:
When he misplaces his notes and has to have the same conversations with someone. They usually end up irritated with him and lose some faith in his ability to help them.
Sometimes he can’t find a copy of the union contract for his shop and can’t help answer questions other members have about their benefits.
